In the pupil, 144 grains hop between the three states of the quartz screw. Their net drift is the arrow of time. Nothing below is a note — every number is read off the grains as they move, and every control changes what they do.

The strange is the space between. Q is raw potential — it cannot be measured, only given a shape, so nothing here counts it. Q_T measures the path instead: how far the grains' forward story is from its reverse. The chain was run in order, each stage leaving its remainder visible.
